Frequently Asked Questions

A Canadian study permit is the document that allows eligible international students to study at a designated learning institution in Canada. Most international students need a study permit before beginning their studies. Applicants generally need a letter of acceptance and must provide the documents required for their individual application, which can include proof of financial support and a Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter where applicable.
Yes. Eligible international students can work off campus while studying in Canada. During regular academic terms, eligible students can currently work up to 24 hours per week. During scheduled breaks, eligible students can generally work unlimited hours, provided they continue to meet the conditions of their study permit.
Some graduates of eligible programmes at eligible Canadian institutions may qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit, known as a PGWP. Eligibility depends on the institution, programme, programme length, language requirements and other current immigration rules. A PGWP is not automatic, so students should confirm the eligibility of their specific programme before choosing it.
Many international students need a Provincial Attestation Letter or Territorial Attestation Letter when applying for a Canadian study permit. However, exemptions apply to certain students. Since January 1, 2026, eligible students entering degree-granting master’s or doctoral programmes at public institutions do not need a PAL or TAL. Students planning to study in Quebec must also check the province’s separate requirements.
Yes. Scholarships and other funding opportunities are available through some Canadian universities, colleges, provinces, territories and external organisations. Eligibility varies by institution and scholarship, so students should research funding opportunities early and check the specific academic and application requirements.
It is best to start several months before your intended intake. This gives you time to research programmes, compare institutions, prepare your academic and financial documents, meet language requirements, apply for admission and complete the study permit process without unnecessary last-minute pressure.
Yes. Canada offers different post-secondary pathways through universities, colleges and other recognised institutions. Universities offer undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programmes, while colleges can provide career-focused, technical and applied programmes. The right pathway depends on your academic background, career goals, budget and preferred learning style.
Yes. Many Canadian institutions offer co-op, internships and other work-integrated learning opportunities that can help students gain practical experience related to their studies. Eligibility and work requirements depend on the programme, institution and current Canadian immigration rules, so students should confirm the details before choosing a programme.
